A leading Irish energy group who are at the forefront of innovation in the energy industry, enabling the transition towards a low-carbon, technology-enabled smart future is seeking to appoint a new Head of Legal to join their growing business. The group play a critical role through the development and safe operation of the electricity transmission grid in Ireland and in Northern Ireland and operate the wholesale Single Electricity Market (SEM) and the East West Inter connector, a high voltage link between Ireland and Great Britain. The group has a pivotal role in the economies of Ireland and Northern Ireland, supporting competition in energy, promoting economic growth, facilitating renewable energy and providing essential services.

Your new role
In your new role as Head of Legal you will hold responsibility for delivery of the legal services to the company in both Ireland and Northern Ireland. The Legal Services function has responsibility for managing and delivering legal advice and legal support services in support of the organisation’s corporate strategy in both Ireland and Northern Ireland. The role holder has primary responsibility for ensuring that the legal advices and supporting services facilitate the Group to deliver its programmes, in particular, in relation to the complex environments surrounding major infrastructure projects. The role holder will also act as a valued legal advisor to the executive and line managers and will provide legal support for major capital projects. The role holder will have significant leadership experience as a senior lawyer either as in an in-house role or in a law firm. The role holder will be results oriented with strong people leadership, influencing and communications skills. In your role as Head of Legal, your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Lead, motivate and engage a high performing team to deliver on the expectations of the business
  • Manage the provision of legal services for the Group over four legal jurisdictions (Ireland, Great Britain and the EU)
  • Ensure that the business needs of the internal customer are delivered in a legally robust and compliant manner
  • Maintain and continue to develop structures, systems and processes to meet the needs of the business and to ensure that services are delivered in an effective and efficient manner
  • Manage an effective “Legal Services Framework” to ensure that best practice legal advice is obtained from appropriate external legal firms to supplement the capability and capacity of the internal team
  • Proactively manage and ensure value for money in respect of external legal advices as required from professional services firms and legal counsel
  • Act as a trusted legal advisor to the senior team, providing sound legal advice on complex matters, ensuring the business interests are protected and legally compliant
  • Provide legal advice and support in relation to complex planning legal matters on major infrastructure development; European Market Integration Project; and the European Network Codes
  • Proactively support the organisation in relation to the introduction of internal organisational change programmes
  • Keep abreast of new domestic and EU legislation and legal developments which affect the business in Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain and put appropriate plans in place to respond
  • Represent the firm externally in relevant public forums, for example, participation at oral hearings and presentation at industry events
  • Manage the legal services departmental budget and oversee the total legal budget for the company, ensuring that cost effective services are always procured and delivered
  • Actively participate as a member of the extended leadership team, role modelling the values and desired leadership behaviours of the company
  • Partner with the Finance and HR teams to manage budget, headcount and labour plans in line with the Delegated Control Framework and group guidelines
  • Exemplify the values and leadership behaviours expected of a leader in the organisation.

What you'll need to succeed
  • You will be a qualified legal professional with significant expertise and experience in legal matters associated with infrastructure planning and contract law.
  • You will be passionate about leading people and have experience of creating, leading and influencing high performing teams in changing circumstances
  • You should have the ability to manage a range of relationships with third party legal service providers
  • You will have excellent organisation and planning skills with the ability to embrace new technologies to enable a modern legal function to thrive
  • You should have strong interpersonal, communications and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage with, and to influence, the Board of Directors
  • You should demonstrate credibility, sound judgment with the ability to make decisions quickly and effectively
  • You will have strong commercial skills with the ability to apply legal knowledge and experience in a commercial setting
  • You will be able to produce quality results in a fast-paced, deadline sensitive environment
  • You may have experience of the energy sector, commercial semi-state, legal issues associated with large infrastructure development or of a regulated environment.
